Water Treatment Update

City of Fountain Utilities continues to provide safe drinking water from its ground wells
Posted on 01/14/2019

The City of Fountain Water Department recently replaced the Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) in two of its water treatment facilities located in downtown Fountain. In September 2018, lab test results indicated that the GAC was beginning to lose its effectiveness for removing groundwater contaminants, known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). GAC is an proven treatment method for removing PFAS, but over time the carbon must be replaced to maintain its effectiveness. Fountain ceased treatment and distribution from these wells in order to begin the process of replacing the GAC.

Fountain contracted with Calgon Carbon Corporation to begin the rigorous process of removing the spent Activated Carbon. In December 2018, Fountain completed the removal and replacement of Granular Activated Carbon in both treatment units. Both wells are operating at full-capacity and delivering safe, treated groundwater into Fountain’s water distribution system.
