Neighborhood Watch
Neighborhood watch is a program that the Fountain Police Department is implementing throughout the city. This program is intended to make the citizens and visitors to our city feel safer and enhance the quality of life. This is truly a program that is successful as an anti-crime effort, because participants work together as a community-neighbor looking out for their neighbor.
What does a Neighborhood Watch do?

Teaches citizens crime prevention techniques to reduce the risk of being victimized at home or in public.
- Trains citizens on the importance of recognizing suspicious activities and how to report them.
- Teaches participants how to make their homes more secure and the importance of recording and identifying their property.
- Allows neighbors to get to know each other and their routines so that any out of ordinary activity can be reported and investigated.
- Creates a cohesive body of concerned citizens who become the eyes and ears of law enforcement, thus becoming actively involved in the reduction of crime in their community.
If you don't start a neighborhood watch program in your area and feel others will take on the responsibility to get a program started, chances are that no one will take the effort to start one. Once you take a few simple steps, you might be amazed at how easy it is to organize the program. A neighborhood watch program can be formed around any geographical unit: a block, apartment building, business area, or housing complex. A neighborhood watch group will usually consist of 10-12 houses, but each area is different and it is up to you and your neighbors to decide how many houses will be involved.
How do I start?

Contact Sergeant Matt Racine at the Fountain Police Department at (719) 382-4244 to find out if there is an established program where you live. If there is not, you will be provided with flyers and brochures explaining the neighborhood watch program.

Take these flyers and brochures to your neighbors and ask them if they are interested in starting a neighborhood watch program. Ask them to read the material then follow-up later to get their responses. Once you have enough interested people that want a neighborhood watch program, find out when the majority of the people can attend a meeting. Contact Sgt. Racine to make sure he can be present on the date and time that was selected by your group.

Flyers indicating the date, time and contact person will be given out to those coordinating the first meeting so those flyers can be passed out to people planning to attend the neighborhood watch meeting.

Once you have a neighborhood watch group established, neighborhood watch signs will be placed in your area and you will be given neighborhood watch stickers, have access to view crime prevention videos and given information on personal and home safety. Business Watch Program
The Fountain Police Department Business Watch Program works with business community to reduce crime and the fear of crime. Business Watch fosters a spirit of cooperation among businesses, which helps to decrease crime. Such a program may attract more customers if they believe merchants are attempting to provide a safe shopping environment. However, it has to be a team effort.
